Patience can be helpful when we are trying to put off short term gratification for long term gain. It is necessary, in order to get what we want and need from life, to put off short term gratification. When we are faced with a temptation, we are filled with the thoughts, visions and hormones that tell us to reach out and take the bait. It is best not to take it. Whatever it may be, whether it's masturbation, drugs, fast food or any form of dissociation, its best to feel the sensations occurring in the body, to reason with the thoughts that run through our minds, and resist giving in. In the moment this feels like a kind of agony, but this sensation fades, as is the nature of emotions.
There are times when a little short term gratification is both productive and healthy. I'm not suggesting we give up all of it. What we should resist are those temptations that will result in the degradation of our mind, and the dissociation of our selves from the truth. If we're on holiday after a good year of work, there is no harm in indulging in dissociative foods. If we've had a productive week, there's no harm in watching a movie. If its part of relaxing, rejuvenating or of fun in a proper setting, then there is no harm in it.
For the rest of the time, we benefit from being patient with ourselves and other people. We benefit from not being overly focused on the end goal and from getting experience in the real world. Our forefathers endured great agonies over long periods of time in order to give us what we have today, when we do the same for the progress of civilisation, we honour them. We make our own contribution when we withhold our desire to 'use up' the resources gathered by previous generations. We do a service to our own when we add to the stock pile, rather than take away from it. This is not easy work. Especially because we are in a welfare-state bubble at present. Everything appears limitless and infinite; because the government are printing counterfeit money at never-before-seen rates. The challenge of today is to resist this fake abundance for the longer-term & more sustainable vision of providing for future family through the generations.
